I found an interesting website that gives us more info
on the fortifications @ Maastricht and some military
history about siege warfare

Alexander Dumas, who wrote the famous classic
"The Three Musketeers" based the hero d'Artagnan
on a real captain, Comte d'Artagnan, who fought
in the siege of Maastricht 1673. Dumas paid tribute to
this man of valour and even his fictional death in the
classic was similar to his death during the siege, where
he was killed by a cannonball.
